In 1989, it was the symbol of communism – a giant, obscenely expensive palace built on the suffering and privation of thousands of Romanians; an extravagant dream of wealth and glamour concocted by Romania's megalomaniac dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and reserved for the communist elite, in cruel contrast to the painful reality of a people living a life of poverty and repression.
Today home to the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, the Senate, the National Contemporary Art Museum, and many major charity functions, The Palace of the Parliament stands as a symbol of democratic process, artistic freedom and a burgeoning civil society.
One of the main tourist attractions in Romania, The Palace is the second largest building in th
e world in surface (after the Pentagon), and the third in volume (after the Cape Canaveral rocket-assembly building and Quetzalcoatl’s pyramid in Cholula, Mexico, and before Keops Pyramid in Giseh, Egypt).
Palatul Parlamentului in numbers:
• Area: 330,000 square meters
• Volume: 2,550,000 cubic meters (bigger than Keops's Pyramide in Giseh, Egypt, which occupies number 4 with a volume of 2.500.000 cubic meters!!)
• Labor: the result of a tremendous national effort involving more than 400 architects, some 20,000 people contributed to its construction.
• The palace contains 6000 rooms.
